TRANSITIONS THROUGH TRIATHLON

Riverside Park South, N.Y.C.

June 2013 - May 2014

Transitions through Triathlon was inspired by my personal journey of becoming a Triathlete through training and competing in the New York City Triathlon. "My mission for Transitions through Triathlon, is to engage the viewer, who as a spectator, looks onto the sculpture as an athletic event. I encourage the viewer to discover the story of the event, unfolding through the actions of each figure. Thus recognizing the succession within the Transitions of the Sculpture's story as a catalyst for personal inspiration."  -  Sherwin Banfield - ARTIST

Meet the CAST of Transitions through Triathlon:

RIVERSIDE PARK SOUTH

The site location of Transitions through Triathlon is Riverside Park South, N.Y.C.  This location happens to be just a few blocks south of the start of The New York City Triathlon location.  It seemed fitting for this community of active New Yorkers who train, practice and compete in sporting events to create and install a Monumental sculpture that reflects the community.

My participation in 2012 The New York City Triathlon became the source of inspiration for my sculpture idea.  Having previously trained for the NYC Triathlon in Riverside Park South, this site location became symbolic for my marriage of Triathlon and Sculpture.

The opportunity to merge these two worlds quickly became an exciting endeavor.  The story of this public work is rooted in my discipline of Fine Art and Multisport.  Merging these disciplines for this site-specific work of art was exciting, fun and rewarding.  Discover the story of Transitions through Triathlon through the cast of figures above.

Victory is the Main Sculpted figure of the Public Sculpture Project entitled 'Transitions through Triathlon'.
She began as a concept symbolizing the acceptance of all Athletes within the world of Triathlon, evolving from a man to a woman as she exemplify the feeling of crossing the Finish line upon completing a Triathlon. She eventually was finished in cast Aluminum. Victory is one of nine individual elements that summarize 'Transitions through Triathlon' currently on view in New York City's Riverside Park South near the 59th street entrance.
